Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund and Walter Salles Talk About Kristen

Kristen Stewart is all grown up in her new movie On the Road. The Twilight starlet gets naked, does drugs and has threesomes in her latest film, which is an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's famous novel.

But her co-star Sam Riley said shooting the sexy scenes with K-Stew, in which she's totally topless, wasn't exactly a turn-on. "It's a strange thing... I was pretty uncomfortable," he told SheKnows yesterday in NYC. "She was 19; I was nearly 30, married... we're mates. You just sort of do it as quickly as possible, unlike in real life. I don't really see a future for me in erotics."

New Kristen Interview with Movieline

Stewart spoke with ML during the Toronto International Film Festival where the film had its North American premiere. She shared thoughts on her character's "hard love," how she grew herself being a part of the film and how this was the "biggest experience" she's felt on a set.

So what was your road to On the Road? 

I was 14 or 15 when I first met Walter Salles. I spoke to him when I was 17, I think I may have shot the first Twilight, I'm not sure - possibly I was about to go do it. At first I was talking about playing another part, so it's been a long time coming. I don't know how I was able to get around that kind of energy, but to convey that I loved this thing in the way [Walter Salles] does and as soon as you get around that energy it passes between you, nothing really needs to be said. I got the job on the spot, and I drove away just vibrating. I was like, 'Are you kidding me?' Plus I was very young, I wasn't quite old enough for the part yet.

When I read the book many years ago, I found it sprawling and didn't seem to have elements that would make it translatable to the screen - at least I remember thinking that at the time. What did you think of the book when you first read it? 

I was reading it for school, so I had to read it. I did independent study when I was in high school. I remember, I took so long to read the book. All I had to do was read it and write a report, it wasn't like I had to do an intensive study of the book, and it took me months and months - I was late. But, I think my teacher was OK with it because I think ultimately the paper was good.

Riley laughs: "Travelling through airports with Kristen is the bees' knees.

"I wouldn't really want to swap lives with her in any other aspect apart from how quickly you can go through airport security.

"They let you off the plane first and then they usher you straight through, straight into VIP."

'On the Road' US Premiere to be at AFI Festival

AFI Fest 2012 today announced the high-profile films that make up its Centerpiece Galas and Special Screenings lineups.

The Centerpiece Galas are: Ang Lee's first foray into 3D "Life of Pi"; "On the Road," from Walter Salles; the animated film "Rise of the Guardians"; and Jacques Audiard's Marion Cotillard-starring drama "Rust and Bone."

AFI FEST presented by Audi will take place November 1 through 8 in Hollywood.

ON THE ROAD: Jack Kerouac’s seminal pseudo-autobiography arrives on the big screen at the intersection of fact and fiction. DIR Walter Salles. SCR Jose Rivera, Jack Kerouac. For many, On the Road is primarily one for the boys. Jack Kerouac's obsession with the egotistical and hedonistic drifter Neal Cassady dominates the book, with the female characters relegated to the back seat, disposable objects that float in and out of the tale at the convenience of the proto-beat lads.

Stewart is Marylou, the book's version of Cassady's first wife, LuAnne Henderson, who joined Cassady and Kerouac on their road trips across America; Dunst is Camille, aka second wife Carolyn Cassady, who stayed at home with the babies in San Francisco. Cassady flitted between these women, sleeping with Carolyn while married to LuAnne, keeping LuAnne as a lover after he had divorced her for Carolyn. Kerouac made little effort to give his female friends depth and dignity on the page; the film attempts to remedy that oversight.That's one view. But to director Walter Salles, the novel's female characters, especially those based on Cassady's long-suffering wives, are "the silent heroines" of the piece. Accordingly, he has cast two of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses – Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst – to play them.
