OK, anybody who didn’t think The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 would be a huge, huge hit is officially stupid.
How huge the final installment of Summit’s ridiculously successful franchise will be remains a question, but check this out: The movie doesn’t open until Nov. 16. Tickets went on sale on Fandango on Oct. 1. On Wednesday, the online ticket merchant said that Breaking Dawnrepresents half the company’s sales for the week.
As of 4 p.m. Oct. 3, Breaking Dawn made up 51 percent of Fandango’s sales for the week. Taken 2 represented 17 percent, Looper accounted for 11 percent, Pitch Perfect made up 8 percent, and Hotel Transylvaniawas 6 percent.
But Looper, Pitch Perfect, and Hotel Transylvania already are in theaters, and Taken 2 arrives on Friday.
Breaking Dawn, as we just said, is about six weeks away.
Breaking Dawn Part 1 opened to $138 million in November, 2011, and went on to gross $705 million worldwide.
Fandango figured that Breaking Dawn Part 2 tickets would sell big — and fast.
In September, Rick Butler, Fandango’s executive vice president and general manager, said in a written statement that “Each installment of ‘The Twilight Saga’ ranks among Fandango’s top pre-selling films of all time. With moviegoers telling us that ‘Breaking Dawn, Part 2′ is their most anticipated film of the Fall season, we fully expect tickets to go quickly, while our fans rely on Fandango to reserve their tickets when advance sales start on October 1.”
Summit’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2, is rated PG-13. It stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner.
